Essay: Our Culture Our Identity

The world is a unique place mixed up with the different cultures that people bear around the world. Cultures refer to social norms, values and behaviors which people follow generation to generation. Culture doesn’t cover only one thing. It includes wide range of people’s life style such as languages, foods, clothes, arts, music, festivals, religions and dances etc. Even a single society may contain lots of cultural differences among the people living there. Those cultural diversities signify who we are and what our culture is and automatically creates our identity. Each culture is distinctive and has its own identity.

Culture varies according to the place where we live, the language we speak, the religion we follow, the food we eat, the clothes we put on and the tradition that we follow. It also varies with the ethnicity and geographical structures. A person who is born in Nepalese society generally follows Nepalese cultures as he/she is experiencing it since his/her birth. The cultures that people have in Himalayan region may not be pursued by the people of Terai region due to geographical variations. The people of Himalayan region have their own cultures that are separated from the people of Hiily and Terai which help them to create their different identities.

Newly born children tend to follow the languages of their parents. They are supposed to wear the dresses that their family members and neighbours put on in various occasions. They are likely to favor the food which is typically eaten in their society. They are influenced by the rituals of their place and community and likely to act accordingly. The particular type of dances performed in specific occasions symbolizes the identity of same place. For instances, the ‘Burqua’ in Muslim society, ‘Deuda’ in far western part of Nepal and ‘Cow’ as goddess Laxmi in Hindu culture are the identity of those respective places and religion.

To sum up, culture also represents our history. The long-age practices of social activities and traditions shape-up the culture. We follow the culture that we are familiar with. It is very tough to adopt the culture of other’s as we are mostly unknown and nit habituated with it. We have already set up our identity through our culture. For an instance, it’s a difficult task to follow Hindu culture for a Christian or Buddhist. Thus our culture is our identity.

ICT for Professional Development

ICTs are information and communication tools that consist of electronic devices for the enhanced connection and co-relation among the people and organizations. According to Thakral (2015), information and communication technologies (ICTs) is the catchall phrase covering the wide range of technologies used for gathering, storing, retrieving, processing, analyzing and transmitting information.

Professional development refers to the increased and improved skills of the people in their respective working areas of profession. It helps them to deliver their service effectively and efficiently enabling them for higher level of productivity. It aims the professionals take and handle their responsibilities decently to achieve the professional goals. It also helps to make the profession more respectful with higher level of achievement.

In the recent times, due to the growing tendency of ICT, every field is greatly attached and need to be integrated with ICT. The use of ICT is beneficial for fast communication, record keeping, managerial work, and training of personnel's etc.

ICT is an essential part of teachers' professional development in this modern era of information and technology. The field of education is always new and changing and need to be updated with the current issues.Vrasidas & Glass (2007) emphasizes that  ICT increases the access to information, with the inspiration for  new development in teacher and following the individuals and communities to interact at any times regarding the importance of ICT for teacher's professional development.  So, ICT is required to integrate in the field teaching and teacher's professional development. ICT can be utilized in teacher's professional development in various ways:

Effective content delivery:-  The teacher can use ICT for assembling the content, preparing teaching materials and deliver those content through effective way so that the students could understand in an enhanced way.

Training:- Training keeps the personnel up to date and refresh in their profession. It is also required for the people before and during the time of their service which can be conducted by using ICT tools such as preparing presentation materials for the training and organizing training through Teams or Zooms etc. According to Vrasidas& Glass (2007),teacher tend to teach as they are taught. So, periodic teacher training can be organized by  using ICT tools.

Enhance interaction:- In the field of teaching, it is a must to have better communication among students, teachers and guardians. ICT can be used for sharing notice, parents' meeting (physically or virtually), collecting information, communicate with students before or after school time to facilitate their learning.

Preparing lesson plan:  A teacher needs to make the lesson plan before entering the class. S/he needs to plan what to teach and how to teach. He or she needs to select content, the methods of delivery, related educational materials and process of evaluation. By using ICT tools the teacher can collect content to teach such as preparing power point, gathering audio and visual materials, deliver his lesson effectively and evaluate students' learning.

Accessing online resources: - Only the text book can't be enough for teaching and learning. The teacher and students both can get necessary resources for gathering information through online by using ICT tools.

Evaluation and Assessment: - ICT helps to assess and evaluate student learning achievement. For instance, virtual examination can be conducted by means of ICT.

Record Keeping: - ICT tools are equally beneficial for record keeping of student attendance, learning achievement, progress and portfolio etc.

Innovative teaching techniques: - Traditional method of teaching can't address the need of modern learners. As a result, innovative methods of teaching should be adopted to facilitate the learner for better understanding.  For an example, teaching through gaming, video and picture display can be implemented in the class.

Adaptability increment:-  ICT helps a teacher to adjust within the certain circumstances to continue his work . For instances, the teacher can use his voice through microphone if he/she doesn't have audio tape for listening activities.

Design, prepare and production of textbook: - ICT helps the teacher for designing, preparing and producing textbook. He/she can collect and develop suitable content as per the requirement of the target level.

Reflection:- Reflection plays significant role for professional development. according to Vrasidas & Glass (2007) , ICT helps a teacher to develop lesson plan, share it with expert and colleagues, receive feedback in each other's work. Thus, ICT provides the ground for reflection and to boost professionalism.

ICT for professional development has some limitations. Adequate infrastructures, access to quality content, time management and technological skills play vital role for its effectiveness.

Google Classroom for Online Learning ( Design a platform for learning)

The world has entered into the era of science and technology. Every sector is greatly attached with ICT. The ICT tools and technologies are integrated in every field. As a result, they have huge influence on education.  Among those, Google classroom is one of the most favourite and effective free web service (virtual platform) developed by Google in the recent times. It was initially released in January 2015 and stably released in April 2021. It is especially designed for educational institution and to create, distribute and grade assignments. According to Iftakhar (2016), it is a tool which aims and supports teacher to create and collect  assignment in a paperless environment. It is also effective for sharing files between teachers and student.  The teacher can post some teaching materials, assign tasks for students, and upload the students’ grades so that they can immediately see the scores obtained in the course (Okmawati, 2020).  Okmawati (2020) further explains that Google Classroom enables teachers to create an online classroom area in which they can manage all the documents that their students need.. But what separates Google Classroom from the regular Google Drive experience is the teacher/student interface, which Google designed for the way teachers and students think and work.

Google Classroom is a part of online Google apps which is productively used in learning by the teachers and students in collaborative way (Sudarsana et al. 2009). It integrates other Google apps including Meet, Docs, Form, Sheet, Slides, and Gmail, Calendar and Drive in to a cohesive manner for the interaction between student and teacher. It provides a place for the students to store their files in an organized and systematic way paperlessly in a room (Iftakhar, 2016).

In the present worldwide scenario of Covid-19 pandemic where the physical class is very tough to resume, the use of technology like Google Classroom is just like mandatory. It provides a virtual platform to establish a connection between teacher and students. Google Classroom ensure the easy access that enable both the teacher and students communicate in group or privately for every task posted by the educators (Salam, 2020).

Regarding the issues of effectiveness of google classroom in relation to the physical classroom and its challenge in primary level, google classroom is a Virtual classroom and an alternative form of physical classroom. The former does massive use of technology and the latter focuses on physical activities with limited use of technology. I think as a virtual classroom, google classroom can be used to perform most of the activities performed in the physical class room such as taking class, assign, evaluate and gradation. However, it can't address the practical activities like experimental works in science lab, attending in the physical activities while teaching and learning physical education etc. Everything has its limitations and see the opportunities beyond those limitations. There may occur some problems in primary level but we can minimize them. As we can see very young children are handling the apps like YouTube for watching videos, Facebook for uploading photos and Tiktok for making short videos. From which we can say that most of them can handle if we take initiation to co-operate with them. we can also educate parents about it. If somebody still faces problem we need to think about another option.

Features:

·         Easy access (create and use both for teacher and student)

·         Integration of different Google apps (Slides, Sheets, Drive, Docs and Calendar etc.)

·         Free

·         Mobile friendly

·         Flexible ( use it in both face to face  and fully online learning environment)

·         Sharing content (including video, link and images),assign, grading.

·         Reuse of content and assignment in the future

·         Time saving

Challenges:

·         Work load (Planning, preparing and presentation of class, selection of content) for many class a day

·         Lack of  ICT proficiency ( use and handle technology for preparing materials)

·         Attitude ( for use of technology)

·          Plagiarism

Implicatios:

·         Educational institutions can connect the institutions, teachers and students  in the preferred times, track students activities and keep related records .

·         Teachers can use it in both physical and virtual class for delivering their lessons, assignment, assessment and grading

·         Students can involve in the learning activities, doing assignments and  re use of the materials
